Maison Langbehn - rue Renkin 90-92
This wide building with its symmetrical upper floor is in fact divided into two linked houses, and was built around 1905 to the design of the architect Jean Van Hall, who himself lived in the larger of the two houses: the other was let to a shop. The geometric Art Nouveau decoration is a beautiful blend of techniques and materials: stained glass and wrought iron with dragonfly and butterfly motifs, rusticated pink sandstone and a wooden oriel window. The interior contains several impressive rooms which have recently been restored and converted to a new use.
Privathaus (rue Seutin 8)
This family home built in 1886 occupies a double-plot of land in the Rue Seutin. It was formerly the home of Emile Bulcke, a painter and sculptor born in Ostend. Now it is the home of a painter and interior designer who has painstakingly restored it. The living room with its beautiful Art Nouveau fireplace and the dining room are a harmonious blending of past history and contemporary living.
Privathaus (rue Van Hasselt)
In 1900, the architect Gaspard Devalck built this house for use by his mother and moved his architect's office here. The white-brick facade is pierced by magnificent stained-glass windows. The first floor is decorated with a small wooden oriel window decorated with stained glass depicting a countryside scene. The first-floor rooms of the interior are decorated with wood panelling and ceramic tiles.
Privathaus von Gustave Strauven - rue Luther 28
Gustave Strauven was particularly good at designing narrow houses on odd-shaped plots of land in an exuberant Art Nouveau style. In 1902, he designed this, his first house for himself, on a plot barely 375cm wide! Visits will be guided by the owner.
Privathaus Herrera - av. de l'Opale 11
This house was built in 1925 to the designs of an unknown architect for a Spanish lady client who visibly requested an interior that made references to Spanish architecture and interior design. Although the outside is very plain, the interior is astonishing: it is laid out around a patio covered with a stained-glass roof, decorated with ceramics and featuring a small fountain. The interior is enriched with many structural and decorative features that refer to the traditional Spanish or Art Deco styles. Visits will be guided by the owners. Privathäuser - avenue du Castel 21&19
This pair of houses were built in 1926 to the designs of the architect Raphaël Lambin and are the best-preserved of an original group of five. The geometric garden gates and entrance porches, decorated in black-and-gold ceramics, mark out these houses as Art Deco. We will visit the interior of the house lived in by Lambin himself and the entrance hall of the house next door.
Ehem. Privathaus von François Hemelsoet - avenue Princesse Elisabeth 22
In 1902, François Hemelsoet drew the plans of his first house for himself in an Eclectic style with resolutely Art Nouveau decorative features. Visits organised in collaboration with PatriS (the Schaerbeek Heritage Association).
