04./06.01.2010 Fox Glacier

The next day on our way down to Fox Glacier it was raining once again...

At the beautiful Pencake Rocks we got a small spot of sunshine until - we guess you know - it started raining again...

During high tide the water blows right up between the rock formations. Must be a great impression

We needed a little snack on the road... Non alcoholic ginger beer and some chocolate

The tour started with a short busdrive up to the carpark followed by one and half hour walk up to the glacier tounge.
Later the ice climb took place on the right side just about 100 meters from the end of it.

You simply can't imagine how huge such a glacier is even when you're standing right infront of it. Amazing feeling!!!

On this little spot we practised for a little while just for getting used to the tools and the crampons on our boots.

Then we walked right over die Glacier heard it crack from now and then and our Guide Sam was looking for good spot to do the bigger climbs. Awesome to walk there look down the light blue crevasses (Gletscherspalten), jump over those and suck in the feeling you're walking on a mooving tongue of ice!

A few meters deep, blue and cold

That's me and Sam standing on the edge of the crevasse before he let me down on the rope. He told me yesterday the climb was about 30 meters but I guess from the pictures that it had been only +/- 20 meters. From this angle you can't see the whole climbing distance.

It took about 1 minute to go down and appr. 5 minutes to go up. And we were getting faster from climb to climb.

That was our view from the campsite to the mountains. One day before the peaks where covered with snow.
Behind this valley the Glacier ends not 2 km away from the city
Our next steps will be Wananka. We already booked on a scienic flight over Milford Sound including a 3/4 h cruise there.
Then the plan is to go up to Christchurch meet some friends of Daniela there, before driving up to Kaikoura for the Whale whatching. And then.... we have to back to Christchurch for our flight back home
Sorry, but we don't wanna come back to the Winterwonderland )
