Champagne Ardenne
Rundfahrt zu den Fachwerkkirchen : Mathaux
Mathaux Church was the last of the timber-frame churches to be built in Champagne. It was built in 1761 by a carpenter from Dienville in a style inspired by the religious stone architecture of the time.
The most original element of this Latin cross-shaped church, which has a nave without aisles and wide transept arms, is the bell tower, seVon the first bay of the nave, an imposing square tower covered entirely with wooden shingles and topped with an elegant cupola. It was destroyed, along with the nave, by a storm in 1983 and was rebuilt entirely afresh.
The interior boasts a neo-Gothic wooden altar and an unusually shaped tabernacle, as well as a 17th century painting depicting Christ at the grape press.
Besonders interessant ist die Dokumentation der 1985 erfolgen Restauration der Kirche.
